Career Guidance for Students: What We Have Learnt in 16+ Years of Teaching

Practical career guidance for students in Classes 9 to 12, and their parents, from teachers who have watched hundreds of students choose their paths.

Since 2009, we have taught more than a thousand students in Kharghar, and many of our former students are now doctors, civil servants and lawyers. Very few of them followed a straight line. What helped most was not a perfect plan made at 15, but good habits, honest self-knowledge and parents who listened.

This is the career guidance we give students and parents in Classes 9 to 12, drawn from more than 16 years in education.

Five principles of good career planning

1. Start with interests, not salaries

Ask: which subjects does your child enjoy even when they are hard? What do they do in their free time? Students do best, and stay longest, in fields they genuinely care about. A well-paid career a student dislikes is a hard life.

2. Look at strengths honestly

Marks are one signal, not the only one. Notice how your child thinks: with numbers, with words, with people, with their hands, with images. Teachers can often add useful observations here.

3. Explore before deciding

Many careers are invisible to students. Talk to professionals in the family and neighbourhood, watch interviews, visit workplaces, try short online courses, and read about fields beyond the familiar ones.

4. Keep doors open where possible

In Classes 9 and 10, a strong foundation in Mathematics, Science and English keeps the most options open. After Class 10, choose a stream that fits your direction, but remember that many fields accept students from more than one stream.

5. Separate your dreams from your child’s

Every parent has hopes for their child. The most helpful parents share those hopes, and then listen. A child who chooses their own path, with your support, works harder at it.

What to do in each class

  • Class 9: explore widely; build strong basics; try olympiads, clubs and activities to discover interests.
  • Class 10: narrow down to two or three directions; research which stream after Class 10 fits each; talk to people in those fields.
  • Class 11: confirm the direction; learn about entrance exams, colleges and timelines for your chosen fields.
  • Class 12: prepare for boards and entrance exams together, and keep a realistic backup option.

Career paths by stream, at a glance

  • Science (with Mathematics): engineering, architecture, computer science, data science, pure sciences and research, defence services, aviation.
  • Science (with Biology): medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy, biotechnology, environmental and life sciences, psychology.
  • Commerce: chartered accountancy, company secretary, finance, banking, economics, business management, entrepreneurship.
  • Humanities / Arts: law, civil services, journalism, psychology, design, teaching, social work, languages, international relations, the arts.

Several paths, such as law, design, psychology, management and the civil services, are open to students from any stream.

Common mistakes we see

  • Choosing a stream because friends are choosing it.
  • Deciding entirely on the basis of a single test, ranking or salary report.
  • Assuming Commerce or Humanities are for students who “could not do Science.”
  • Leaving all research until the week before admissions.

Frequently asked questions

When should a student start thinking about a career?

Class 9 is a good time to start exploring, without pressure to decide. The first real decision usually comes after Class 10, with the choice of stream, and it helps to have explored interests before then.

Is engineering or medicine the only good career for Science students?

No. Science also leads to research, architecture, data science, design, biotechnology, environmental science, psychology, pharmacy, defence services and many other fields. Commerce and the Humanities open equally strong paths.

Are aptitude tests useful?

They can be a useful starting point for a conversation, but they should not decide a career on their own. Combine them with the student’s interests, marks, conversations with professionals and real experience.

Does TBTLC offer career guidance?

Yes. We run parent and student workshops on study habits, exam preparation, career guidance and academic planning. Ask us about upcoming sessions when you enquire.
